Can you read as well as a fifth grader?

As someone who used to play around with WordPerfect and Word as a child, I find this article absolutely fascinating. I always wondered why my middle school papers were at the 6th grade level and never got any better.

I never took these estimates too seriously, but it strikes me as some very technically minded programmers trying to shoehorn abstractions into a formula. They tend to do that. Believe me. I live with one.
